Frog Dude, Fun Type, and a Giraffe-Cat

Frog Dude, Fun Type, and a Giraffe-Cat I figured it was time to pull a few drawings from my sketchbook. A couple came from simple free sketching while the third was the result of a friend getting married.

Lunch Sketching at Work

Lunch Sketching at Work Sketching over our lunch hour. Loving my new job.

Birthday+Type

Birthday+Type My boyfriend’s dad is having a birthday, what a great opportunity to draw some type and make a card!

Illustration… Today

Illustration… Today My illustration-a-day plan didn’t need to be as involved as I’d originally thought. I thought I needed to sit down, click-on my desk lamp, and draw for hours, use all of my materials, color it, shading, blending, the whole thing. I was wrong. I’d been growing my illustration skills every time I doodled in a meeting, drew out my name, and explored shapes while I sketched for projects. This illustrative epiphany occurred today after a meeting where I was left with this sprawled across my notebook. Nothing more than my name in three typefaces, mixed with numbers, pulled...

Updating the Print Portfolio… Photography

As I go through the portfolio I created for graduation from design school, I see several holes and an opportunity to showcase the work I’ve done in the two years since graduation. It’s amazing to see the growth within those two years. Naturally, my new and updated portfolio looks little like that student portfolio did. Going through my projects and pieces, I noticed some pieces were shot on white, some on black, and some on gray. Obvioiusly, that was not going to work. What a great opportunity, or excuse, to build a light box and buy a tripod for my camera! After some focused...

Tie-Dye Friday

Tie-Dye Friday It’s Friday again, so I’m wearing another tie-dyed shirt. Of course it’s paired with a bit of hip jewelry from my silver peace sign belt buckle. Fabric dying is such an interesting art and every piece finishes differently. It’s an ideal way to relinquish a little control and be surprised by the outcome, which is often incredible. Whether it’s using wax resists or adding black dyes, the process is as much about the finished design as the initial idea. Design and fabric dying are closely related and require many of the similar principles such as conscious color...

Great Way to Spend an Afternoon in Indy

Great Way to Spend an Afternoon in Indy A gorgeous and delicious chocolate chip sundae and my iPad. What a beautiful way to spend a few hours in Indy. This city seems to have a character I’ve never seen and a sense of Southern hospitality Minnesota Nice doesn’t quite possess. It’s a fantasic day, sunny, 82, so naturally the choice was ice cream. I wasn’t expecting to see a brick of chocolate chip cookie goodness drizzled in chocolate sauce next to my ice cream. It was delicious and paired nicely with ADFREAK and Brand New articles, peppered with Twitter and Facebook updates. I could get used to...

Always, always, always a work in progress. Never a stale portfolio.

This website is a work in progress, and will forever be a work in progress. I am determined to continue to grow as a designer and my work should reflect that growth. New work, new projects, and new illustrations will be posted as they are completed and I encourage you to come back often and see the work.

Work all day… Then, work all night.

Work all day… Then, work all night. I spend nine hours a day at work, then I come home and work on my computer until I go to sleep. Even more, when I am set on relaxing, I watch shows with stories of people at work: Bones, Mounted in Alaska etc. It’s something to think about. Clearly, I love what I do and my work and personal life closely coincide. This reminded me of the interconnected relationship between the characters of the Pixar short Day & Night. It shows the dichotomy of the two but communicates the similarities and value of each. I’m so glad I am fortunate and focused enough to work in this field. I...

Illustration-a-Day 01

Illustration-a-Day 01 Day 01 I found myself more enamored with the clock today than most days. Whether it was some issues in my personal life or the lack of looming deadline, I felt a pocket watch was a great way to start my Illustration-a-Day adventure. Alice and the White Rabbit had quite the fascination so, naturally, I was inspired by that story. A pocket watch seemingly lacking any sense reflecting Alice’s trip down the rabbit...
